Union Rally For Brockton Power Plant A Success!
1/28/2009

Rally was a huge success with over 500 workers and family members. Special thanks to Bill DeMello, Local 51 Business Agent, for lighting the fire under everyone to make this rally happen.

These are a few emails that were sent out thanking everyone for their support. Thank you to all members, family, and friends of Local 51 for attending the rally and making it a complete success!!!

To All;
Last night’s  Rally was a huge success with over 500 workers and family members.  Thank you for  stepping up. You guys  were awesome.
This  turnout helped  triple our  city councilor  support base from 1 to 3 at the conclusion of the CC meeting last night.  We only need  three more councilors  to win a simple majority vote.
Tim Cruise and  Chris McMillan are now supporters along with  Petti.
We are confident  that BCE  will get a preliminary Siting  approval next month and  a final Siting by April. This could lead to a ground breaking by Winter  09 if the  City agreed to drop their opposition.
Thank you again

To Core Committee:
We had a great time last night at the union rally (see below)! There was a lot of spirit and it was empowering to be with a crowd of people in favor of the project. I know that we made Councilor Todd Petti 17 Harlan Terr Brockton MA  02301 feel really proud of his courageous  army-of-one support that he has given to the project. The rally also inspired Council President Timothy Cruise 12 Bassett Road  Brockton   MA  02301 and Councilor Christopher Macmillan 67 Martland Ave Brockton MA  02301 to declare their support openly; they ‘saw the light.’    It would be a good idea for letters from the union members and/or leadership to go directly to these councilors thanking them for their support.

I would like to shout out a special thanks to Bill DeMello for lighting the fire under everyone to make this rally happen. Also to Tim Cayton who has committed himself to stay with us to the finish on this project. Both he and Bill testified and spoke powerfully last night. Bill let the City Council know that support goes both ways; that if the unions support them when they run for office, then in return the city councilors should support opportunities for jobs. He didn’t quite say......or else!!! But the message was that there are 6000 union workers in Brockton who vote and can make a difference in the outcome of an election. Tim Cayton was amazing! He spoke passionately for a long time and clearly brought up all the benefits of the project and how ridiculous and irresponsible it is for the council to say no to a project that will bring in more revenue than the 10 highest taxpayers in Brockton combined. He pointed out other economic realities that Brockton faces on the revenue side, the lay-off situation, and public safety concerns.  He also plainly requested that the council should withdraw its opposition to the project at the EFSB immediately and stop spending taxpayers’ money on lawyers to fight the project. Congratulations and thanks to Bill and Tim! You two were fantastic.
